Little Brown Dog

Those two that you see are very fast friends –

May their friendship never fail

My own little boy and the little brown dog

With the white on the tip of his tail.

Oh Little Brown Dog I love you too

You have in my heart a warm place

You will love me too – you see I can tell

By one look in your little dog face.

Oh Little Brown Dog I remember the night

The night that I stood there and cried

When I saw you, a wee little hungry pup

There by your dead mothers side.

I loved her before I saw you little pup.

I loved her – she was my own.

And the God who knoweth each sparrows fall

I am sure has taken her home.

A dog is only a dog, you say

Oh no she was even a friend

When I sat, wearied by life’s hard road

She came and licked my hand.

It gave me fresh courage I thought if a dog

Could see and understand

That the Father in heaven who knoweth all things

Would lead with His merciful hand.

Oh Little Brown Dog may your mother know

To her trust we will not fail

We’ll love you always Oh Little Brown Dog

With the white on the tip of your tail.
