The Lost Battalion

Six hundred soldiers, gallant and brave

Fighting their way through the enemy’s line

Fighting their way

Determined to stay

Gaining the ground for many a grave

Praying for nothing but strength and time!

Fighting, pushing the enemy back

Whittleseys’ men – a gallant command

Friends left behind

No help can they find

Retreat cut off, they cannot go back

Nothing to do but fight to stand!

Six hundred soldiers, gallant and brave

Fighting for sweetheart, Mother or Wife

Left no desire

Through Hells own fire

They’re tried. When friends come to save

Two hundred-fifty march back alive
